Very soon after the DC reboot revealed the benching of Stephanie Brown and Cass Cain, writer Gail Simone began tweeting and posting about a project she was pitching to “unbench” at least one of the characters.
The book was originally pitched at SDCC 2011 and went through some permutations….

I tried to stay away from the DC debate raging recently, because the whole thing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and the hardcore fans aren’t helping anything.
“Girls don’t read comics,” my ass.
But I saw this new W.W. cover linked on Plurk, and honestly wanted to flip a goddamn table. Honestly, were the terrible, fan-servicey, impractical, and yes I do dare say SEXIST, redesigns not bad enough?
I’ve come to expect panty-shots in Wonder Woman. I won’t say I’m in love with them, I still think it’s demeaning for a woman who is supposed to be a goddamn AMAZON, but fine, it’s a male-dominated industry, and it’s going to be there. Not happy with it, it still sucks, but fine.
But do we really need THIS POSE? A panty-shot is one thing. Illustrating W.W.’s entire pelvic area is unnecessary, and bordering on pornographic. Note the specific placement of the two main stars while we’re at it. The entire drama of the of the “main” part of this illustration is entirely wasted on the titillating distraction.
And then, as a defense, I had a friend tell me: “Well, sex sells.” And that makes this objectification okay?
As if I hadn’t lost all faith in DC due to the reboot, shit like this makes me entirely too happy that it was never my brand. NEWSFLASH, DC: YOUR CONSUMERS ARE NOT ALL GUYS WHO LIVE IN THEIR BASEMENTS AND NEVER SEE THE FEMALE FORM ASIDE FROM YOUR COMICS…though sometimes I do wonder about your artists.
